North America Nebula (NGC 7000), Cygnus Constellation. Gelatin silver print, vintage 23 x 17 cm / 9,1 x 6,7 inch
The North America Nebula owes this nickname to its shape, reminiscent of the North American continent. It is officially known as NGC 7000. Located in the Cygnus constellation, it was discovered by William HERSCHEL (1738-1822) on October 24, 1786.
It is a nebula in emission. Ionized gas clouds absorb light and re-emit light.
The lower part, which looks like Mexico, is commonly called "The Cygnus Wall" also because of its shape, looking like a swan (cygnus in Latin).
