The North America Nebula owes this nickname to its shape, reminiscent of the North American continent. It is officially known as NGC 7000....
The Cygnus Wall, Nebula North America (NGC7000), Cygnus Constellation. Gelatin silver print, vintage 22,6 x 16,7 cm / 8,9 x 6,6 inch
The Cygnus Wall is located south of the North America Nebula, named NGC 7000 in John Louis Emil DREYER’s New General Catalog of Nebula and Clusters of Stars (NGC) (1852-1926). This "Wall" is in the Cygnus (Swan) Constellation, one of the 48 Constellations described by the astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century BC.
This part of the nebula is particularly bright. It is a cocoon of gas where many stars are born.
