Chanel on the stairs

Douglas KIRKLAND

1962

The grand staircase of the shop on rue Cambon is no longer to be seen. It hosted the first CHANEL fashion shows and is, with the building that houses it, classified as a historical monument. It is the setting for many of Douglas KIRKLAND’s photographs in this series. Gabrielle CHANEL can be seen supervising the hidden parade at the very top as she was known to do, with all her shyness and reserve.
