Jerusalem, Panorama of the Mount of Olives

P.Z. (Photochrome Zurich)

Circa 1895

Photochrome, Vintage, 22,5 cm x 16,5 cm, Collection Privée

The Mount of Olives, 900 meters high, is on the east side of Jerusalem. This mount is significant for the three religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. According to the Old Testament, the Last Judgment will take place in the valley of Josaphat, located at the foot of this mount. Luke the Evangelist said that Jesus often went to the mount with his disciples and predicted the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, looking towards its construction from the top of the mountain. After his death, Jesus ascended to heaven in this place as the Qur’an says, "Jesus did not die crucified, but God raised Jesus to him." [2]
