series: Day to Night, digital photography
Stephen WILKES made two very similar photographies in terms of subject and composition, Coney Island Boardwalk and Santa Monica Pier, in the series Day to Night. One was taken in 2011 and the other in 2013. Two years separate these two photos as well as about 4500 km. However, there are many similarities between them. It is first of all the subject that is obvious, there are two typical American beaches with an amusement park and a fine sandy beach separated by a long pedestrian road. Depending on the subject he photographs, the artist has applied different cut-outs between day and night. In these two photographs the same separation is used. It is the road that connects these two times of the day. A line that goes straight to the vanishing point of the image, giving an impression of infinity. In these two pictures, Stephen WILKES attributes night to the left side where the buildings and amusement parks are located. The very sunny day, is on the beach where the characters relax and swim.
