Oriental Mare Basin on the Moon. Photograph of the basin of the Oriental Mare on the Moon. The basin forms a giant "bull’s eye" on the western branch of the Moon. Three distinct circular rings can be seen. The outermost part is the Cordillera Escarpe, about 900 km in diameter. The basin was formed by a giant impact at the beginning of the Moon’s history. The North Pole is up.
